Katherine Mae (Watkins) Burgess

Katherine Mae Watkins Burgess “Mrs. B,” 87, of Trinity, NC, passed peacefully on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born August 2, 1937 in Richmond County, NC, she was the daughter of the late George Charles Watkins and Thelma Bennett Seago. Kathy was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School. She furthered her education at Wingate Junior College and graduated from Appalachian State University, obtaining her Bachelor of Education degree. She began her career in 1959, at Walkertown Elementary, teaching 1st grade. She continued teaching at various elementary schools until 1982. Following, she began her mission as a nursing assistant while continuing as a substitute teacher. Her heart beat for her students and she considered each one as her own. She had a lifelong relationship with Jesus and was an active member at Colonial Baptist Church. While at Colonial Baptist, she taught bible school, sang in the choir, coordinated Prayer Warriors, and participated in many mission trips. She was an advocate for the forgiveness of others and saw the good in every person whom she crossed paths with. Kathy was musically inclined with the voice of an Angel. Along with singing, she also played the piano and trumpet. She sought comfort in her hymns with one of her favorites being, “It Is Well with My Soul.” She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Connie Carlyle Burgess, and children, Angela Burgess Poole and Daphne Burgess Houghton (Doug). She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Olivia Houghton, Jacob Poole, James Houghton (Stephanie), Joseph Poole, Mary Katherine Poole, and Elisabeth Houghton, all of which affectionately called her "Grammy" and brought her so much joy and laughter. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Thelma Watkins, and her three siblings, Wallace Watkins, Richard Watkins, and Elizabeth Sue Watkins Walters Braden. Funeral Services will be held, Friday, January 17, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Colonial Baptist Church in Trinity with Rev. Steve Jarvis officiating. A burial will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 am until the time of the service at the church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pam Presson, Larry Stone, and to all those who assisted with her care.
